More about Wassily Lounge Chair - Black Cowhide
The iconic Wassily Chair is a masterpiece of modernism, crafted from leather or canvas straps stretched across a tubular steel frame, inspired by the curved lines of a bicycle. Designed in 1925, it was the first chair of its kind and remains a timeless symbol of innovative design.
Marcel Breuer, then an apprentice at the Bauhaus, revolutionized furniture design by reducing the classic club chair to its essential lines.
His inspiration to work with tubular steel came from learning how the material, used in bicycle frames, could be "bent like macaroni."
Fascinated by its lightweight, durable, and flexible properties, Breuer sought to create furniture that embodied transparency and functionality. One of the chair's early prototypes captivated his colleague Wassily Kandinsky, ultimately lending the chair its iconic name.
